Muckrakers during the Progressive Era exposed powerful businesses. Muckrakers like Lewis Hine and Jacob Riis used photography as proof to prove their points.
Hine was best known as a social reform photographer in the Progressive Era. His famous photographs included children in the workspace. While Hine took his photos, his intentions were to help change child labor laws.

Riis, also a social reformer, used photography to reveal the sanitation and living conditions of people in New York City. They called these people “side slums.” His goal was to have knowledge of situations and problems in their cities.
